The scholarship is named for David A. Burnstein, a retired University of Minnesota professor who served as professor and head of the school's College of Business from 1977 to 1995. Burnstein served as executive director of the University of Minnesota's Airline and Aviation Support Foundation from 1993 to 2004, and he was president of the National Association of Business Aviation Teachers. He was an associate professor of aviation management at the University of Minnesota and an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois.


The scholarships, based on financial need, are awarded based on the individual's academic record, attendance and extracurricular activities, as well as in recognition of community service and leadership.


"All students need a support system to help them obtain their goals," said David Dornbusch, Executive Director of the Cass Technical High School Foundation. "Cass Technical High School graduates must maintain their health and well-being to be successful as they pursue their education. The David A. Burnstein Scholarship program helps provide a valuable support network to ensure students have the necessary support, resources and encouragement to meet and surpass the goals set out for them."
